The International Gamefish Foundation (IGFA) hasn’t yet approved angler Tim Champagne’s record catch as the biggest mangrove snapper ever caught, and whether they do or not, that’s still a beast of a grey.

Champagne caught what could become the biggest grey snapper (Lutjanus griseus) ever recorded by the IGFA. Champagne caught the massive 8.45 kg (18 lb 10 oz) grey snapper–commonly referred to as mangrove snapper–on July 22nd while fishing out of Cocodrie, Louisiana aboard the M/V Showtime, captained by Andre Boudreaux. After crushing the live croaker he was fishing, Champagne needed approximately 5 minutes to subdue the potential World Record. If approved, this mammoth mangrove snapper will replace the existing record, which has stood at 7.71 kg (17 lb) since 1992.
